A dynamic rhythm of sampled construction noises, a drum solo and rhythmically edited words relating to construction. That's BATSE (Shovel). The text starts with spade - scoop - shovel and ends in variations on the word Encounter.
It is our version of a modern drum band announcing the festive start of an urban renewal project. Batse will be broadcast on regional TV and on TV screens in shops and other locations in the fortified town of Coevorden in the days and weeks around March 30th, 2005. The Internet version can be seen via www.coevordenbeweegt.nl, as well as via the links below. Mark Wester composed and performs the music, Bert Diercks is the editor.

On March 30th, 2005, a project initiated by the town council commenced in Coevorden to renovate its town centre. Demolition comes first, followed by construction. All in all, the entire process may take up to fifteen years. This urban renewal must also become manifest in art. We have been granted a free assignment to create several projects. The theme we have opted for is Encounter. Batse is project 1.
